about

Landscape/Soundscape II (2017)

Composing for and improvising directly on the strings and other parts of a piano (rather than on the keys) has been a long-time part of my practice as a musician. In the 1970s as an improvising performer, I collaborated with Peter Sculthorpe on works of his that used this approach to the piano, including Landscape, Koto Music I, Koto Music II and Rites of Passage. After that I continued the practice as a performer/composer, culminating with the release of my CD Terrains (Tall Poppies Records, 2001).

My Landscape/Soundscape II for the instruments of the Piano Mill (like my recent piece Landscape/Soundscape I for two grand pianos) is a memorial piece for Peter. The idea of expanding the palate of piano interior sounds to 16 instruments would have appealed to him a great deal, I believe.

The site-specific piece is an event score that focuses on the creation of complex sound textures through various instructions that promote rhythmic and pitch indeterminacy. The sound production techniques used include strumming the strings, striking the strings with plastic beaters, stopping the strings to create harmonics, striking the metal frame using hand-held golf balls, rolling on the strings with percussion mallets and creating glissandi of harmonics using a stubbie beer bottle like a guitar slide.

The grader blade chimes installed in the Piano Mill are used to signal the transition from one type of piano sound texture to the next.
