about

Messiaen's Birds (2017)
1. Golden Whistler | 2. Superb Lyrebird | 3. Prince Albert Lyrebird 4. Magpie | 5. Grey-cheeked Thrush

French composer Olivier Messiaen saw one of his central themes as bringing the sounds of birds to people who lived in cities. While his notated birdsong is very stylised, it is possible to suspend disbelief during many of his pieces, and be convinced by the impression of birdsong. Messiaen's birdsong first appeared in the Quartet for the End of Time (1941), extended in the Visions de l'Amen (1943) and Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant-Jésus (1944), and found full voice in the Catalogue of the Birds for solo piano in the 1950's. Some of his final works in the 1980's were the Small Sketches of Birds for piano. Messiaen notated birdsong in the wild, and while it has long been suspected he notated birdsong from recordings, evidence is suggested by Australian pianist Graham Williams giving Messiaen an LP of Australian birdsong in 1973. In Messiaen's next large-scale work, Canyons to the Stars (1974), written 14 years before Messiaen visited Australia, a movement based around the song of the woodpecker features a group of Australian birds likely to be notated from this source. These are the birds that are featured in this piece for the piano mill; extracted, distilled, and arranged from Canyon to the Stars, and placed back in something like their natural habitat.
